AbstractEducators and policy makers across Europe are faced with the challenge of integrating increasingly diverse populations into society to create a unified citizenship. These tasks are great for any state but are especially pronounced in the Republic of Moldova, where there is a growing divide between the state and Moldovan teachers. As their European neighbors move toward multicultural approaches to education, many Moldovans reject education reforms aimed at integration and support an education that promotes a homogenous identity, which excludes ethnic minorities. The movement in education toward an exclusive national identity may prove to be an obstacle in establishing a viable and cohesive independent state in the space of the former Soviet Union. It also questions the way in which schools are viewed as places of citizenship formation in today's Europe. This article illuminates these issues by examining the current debates over history education in Moldova. From recently collected interviews, this article focuses on the opinions of secondary school teachers, their reactions to the recent debates, and their thoughts on the role of history education in society.
